Well, the first movie in this list is ‘High Life’ which is a story of some space traveler’s survival in a dangerous space mission. The story is not how they got there, but what happens through-out their journey. And what happens are going to mind boggle you big time! After watching it, I bet you will question if humanity ever existed! Beautifully directed by Claire Denis, the cast includes Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Mia Goth, etc. and all did a splendid job of portraying their roles. Although it wasn’t a commercial success, this critically acclaimed movie has been tagged as a masterpiece by many people. Masterpiece or not, if you want a break from typical sci-fi movies and watch something different, you are going to enjoy this movie without a doubt.

8. Hotel Artemis (2018)

If you are thinking about a hotel after reading the title, don’t get fooled by it! ‘Hotel Artemis’ isn’t about a hotel, but a hospital only for special criminal members where Jodie Foster is the head of that institution. When three criminals get admitted to the hospital after a robbery attempt, chaos initiates as many others get involved. An action-packed criminal movie based on a sci-fi dystopian theme! Now, that sounds interesting!

Jodie Foster is the best thing in this movie hands down.  This is her first appearance after the long gap of ‘Elysium’ in 2013. She shines above all! Other casts like Sterling K. Brown, Sofia Boutella, Dave Bautista, and everyone else were true to their characters. The action scenes were also good to a great extent. A good watch for sure!

7. The Man Who Fell to Earth

To think this movie was released back in 1976, ‘The man who fell to earth’ doesn’t seem so old considering the evergreen concept of aliens falling in love with humans! Being a movie adaptation of the same-named novel, the plot is quite simple and predictable. But this classic is, in fact, one of the best sci-fi movies of that era. Even after 44 years of the film release, this movie has maintained its cult status due to the storytelling and visualization, not to mention David Bowie’s charismatic presence throughout the movie. It was his first major film as the lead, and he nailed it!

6. The Vast of Night (2020)

5. Annihilation (2018)

okay, now this movie is kind of a blend of science fiction and horror with a twisted storyline! We are talking about the 2018 movie ‘Annihilation’, starring Natalie Portman as thbese lead. The plot is about a group of scientists trying to figure out the mystery of an extraterrestrial phenomenon happening in the American Coastline. When Lena’s husband goes missing, she takes upon the mission of entering the place where laws of nature don’t work. What happens when they enter that mysterious area? Did they survive? Imagine you teleported to an Egypt like planet using an interstellar gateway. The planet is ruled by a ruthless tyrant, who is actually an Alien disguised as human ! And, In order to get back to earth, you must defeat him! Sounds like a quest, right? Well, the 1994 ‘Stargate’ movie is a fusion of science fiction, fantasy, and adventure! With a compelling story and detailed graphic works, ‘Stargate’ has earned both money and worldwide recognition. Kurt Russel and James Spader as the protagonists, and Jaye Davidson as the alien reprised their roles perfectly. However, Jay Davidson retired from acting and never appeared in a film until 2009. The first screening result of this movie was so bad, the production house had to make some changes. And the second screening test turned out to be a successful one! It’s a shame that no sequels of this movie came out.

What would you do if you are being hunted by some evil extraterrestrials? Creatures who can catch you by the mere sound you make! Okay, that is scary. Basically, this is the plot of the movie ‘A quiet place’, our protagonists are trying to save themselves from these nightmarish creatures! This movie was both a critical and commercial success. The acting, story, along with the sound editing of this movie was highly praised. 2. Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary (2019)

You must be thinking, why a documentary film is listed here, that too on number two position! The answer is right here my friends. In 1999 a parody movie named ‘Galaxy Quest’ got released to pay as an homage to the sci-fi genre, it was a smash hit right away, earning love from all the fandoms. So much so that in 2019, producers of ‘Honest Trailers’ released a fan-made documentary film featuring the background of this cult movie making. It is fun to watch as you get to know the makers and actor’s perspectives, and how all those little details are combined to make the whole thing! Fun thing is, this documentary film is made by the fans, for the fans! Talk about the fandom!

1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

Number one in this list is the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. First of all, the Star Trek series is our absolute favorite. But this particular movie tops them all! This is the second installment of the Star Trek film series, where Captain Kirk and his crew have to fight against an extraordinary mutant called Khan. This is the first-ever film to have an entire sequence created by using computer graphics. Amazing!

This box office slasher was a critique hit as well for having pace and quality acting. The franchise has made several sequels and reboots after this, but Star Trek II is still the best one to date!
